Drag your rear brake just a bit. This will give you some resistance to the peddling forces lifting your front wheel making it a little easier to find the right balance point. If you pedal too hard or lean too far back just brake a little harder and you'll bring your wheel down. Also, speed is your friend here. It's scarey but if you can go a little faster the bike will want to stay upright better.

And, Practice, Practice, Practice. Wheelies are the kind of thing that look a lot easier than they are. Once you get wheelies down try manuals (a wheelie done just by leaning back and not pedaling) they are waaay harder but so very cool.

Good luck.

that is in all probability all the way down to distinctive geometry of the cycles, with the mountain bike that is less difficult to bypass your centre of gravity in the direction of the rear wheel than it somewhat is on the BMX. that's as a results of fact the mountain bike is greater than the BMX, and has distinctive relative positions of the seat, handlebars and pedals. There are 2 factors that combine to advance the front wheel off the floor, and that's centre of gravity and the torque reaction on the rear wheel. The closer you will get the centre of gravity to the rear wheel factor of touch with the floor, the fewer torque would be required to advance the front wheel. in case you lean lower back so as that your weight is closer to the rear of the bike, it will be less difficult to advance the front wheel.

pull back on the handlebars and pedal fast enough to get the center of gravity above the rear wheel.
