I hate public transport and waiting around. On a good week I run over 10k in a day I think. Anything to not take a bus, avoid a tram or train. (PS) don't judge today yet, I was depressed and cold and only made it up 1 very steep hill. There is about 10 minutes more light left so I better get moving or I'll be stuck on this answers thing all night. But then I'm not sure if I would say that is how much everyone should run as I have alot more time than most people to fill in and lots more desperation to pound out. I would say one should run until they feel better.

I think it depends upon your goals and what you have time for. If you are getting into competition or want to excel at running, I think a minimum of 20 miles per week is necessary.

If you just want to stay in shape, probably 5 - 10 miles per week is great. Runs of up to 3 miles should keep your cardiovascular system in check.

For me, I run about 30 miles a week. I compete in local 5K / 10K races (amateur level). My schedule looks like this (assuming no race that week)

Sun: Long run -- 7 - 12 miles
Mon: easy run. Maybe 3 miles
Tuesday: 5 miles -- speedwork / intervals
Wednesday: Rest or active rest
Thursday: Tempo run -- 5.5 miles or so -- the first 3 or so miles done at 10K pace.
Friday: Easy run, maybe 3 miles
Saturday: rest or another easy run.

I try to take at least 2 days a week off to rest my joints and recover. My schedule changes a bit if I have a race on the weekend (I skip the long run and make the speedwork an easy run).

The book listed below is fantastic as far as answering your questions about running and the sport in general:

It depends on how fit you are. I run a mile a day, five days a week. I'm in good shape.
