My kittens are 2 weeks old. They dont have that many fleas, but they do have some. How can I safely remove the fleas from the babies? How can I get them off the mama cat also? The mama is not use to water, because she was not our cat, she was my sister's, but after Hurricane Katrina, my sister moved and left the cat with us. Thank You for the help.

It is extremely important to eliminate the fleas on the babies or they could die from anemia (loss of blood). Put a tiny amount of petroleum jelly around the edges of the kitten's ears to keep out the fleas. Place a small amount of dish soap in a glass and fill it 3/4 full with warm water. Fill another glass with fresh water. To remove the fleas, use a fine tooth flea comb, working gently from the head down. When you get fleas on the comb, quickly dip it into the soapy water. The fleas can't swim or jump out because of the soap and will drown. Rinse the comb in fresh water, shake off the excess, and continue combing. Pay particular attention to the stomach and hindquarters, particularly near the tail. You should probably do this at least twice a day until you don't see any more fleas. For the mama cat, try and find a product that is not toxic (i.e., Flea Flea) and won't harm the kittens. You might want to call a vet about this. You should comb her, too. Wash any bedding being used by the Mama and her kittens and make certain it is well rinsed.

If theres not that many fleas,You could pick them off,or take your kittens to the kitchen one by one and put one kitten in the sink and spray the kitten down and use alittle mild dish soap and wash the kitten,And after make sure you towel dry the kittens very well...If you see some fleas,Get a very fine comb and comb the kitten out...This should work...If mommy cat doesn't like water,Call your vet and see if a flea collar or something else will work without harming the babies...When the kittens turn 6 weeks,You can start them on frontline or some other flea program... GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BABIES...

You don't want to use any flea spray or other flea chemical on your kitten until they are 6 weeks of age. If you do, it can really hurt your kitties health and they may even die. The safest solution is to buy a flea comb at your local pet store and comb through the fur. For the mama cat you can buy flea spray or use Advantage which comes in a small tube and you put it in between the cats shoulders. That will get rid of all the fleas. Good Luck!

For the adult cat, use a spray made by Addams. It comes in a blue bottle. You can't use it on the kittens until they are 12 weeks. Just bathe them baby shampoo. Water will drown the fleas. When the kittens are old enough, get a carpet powder made my Zodiac to get rid of fleas in the carpet and furniture. Do the whole house at the same time. Crate the cats while you do this. One of my cats had a bad reaction to the powder. You've got to get rid of the fleas, no matter the cost or trouble. Aside from being a nuissance, fleas carry disease and parasites that can make you or your cats very sick. Once you've got rid of the fleas in your house and on your cats, you shouldn't have this problem again for awhile. Good luck.

I'd recommend talking to your local pet store or a local vet and asking about products that are safe to use on kittens and the mother cat. You may be able to get a kitten safe flea collar or some such.
I dont know about US products, but here in Australia they make quite a few good brands of flea treatments in tubes and tablet form, and flea collars for all ages of cats.

I wouldn't recommend water to try and remove the fleas...cats hate it, and panic when it comes near them. You are risking quite a few annoying injuries.

I hope this helps! :)

You'll have to leave the kittens be for another couple weeks before you do anything but I would strongly suggest that you bathe the momma cat whether she likes it or not. You might get some cheap leather gloves to do it because that will offer you a little more protection from her teeth. Use a flea shampoo for her and when the kittens are a little bigger you can bathe them as well. Be sure to spray her bedding area with a mild insecticide, or simply launder if it's feasable. You'll need to hoover daily as well if the kitties are indoors.

there is a shampoo that you can get from your vet or have the vet to it since the mother isn't used to water. that's what i'd do....since she's not used to the water, you'd probably just end up getting scratched or bitten. cat bites and scratches are really bad because they carry a staph that if you don't get them cleaned out right away can cause a pretty nasty infection. so...take the mother and kittens to the vet and have them bathed...they can't dip the mother since she's still nursing and that is too toxic for the kittens but the shampoo that they use is AWESOME! it is called mycodex so let them know that that's what you want, if they don't have it get the equivalent. what vets use is stronger than anything you can get at a store.

I heard that lemon scented liquid Dawn was good to use on them to bathe them daily. (KITTENS) Clean their area with lemon cleansers that are enviromentally safe. Then on the mama cat use Advantix, it kills fleas in 24 hrs. But to safe guard your house you need to exterminate. I reccomend Raid fast acting with no scent. Start with the base boards and carpet.. any where you know the cats can't get to. Advantix isn't that expensive if you can afford 15/20. bucks for the mama. You can also check with your local shelter for help. They are more then happy to help victims of our hurricanes.
