Have you ever been drinking water in a water fountain next a bathroom... And suddenly you hear a flush and your water runs out short? That does not only irritate me, but has made me want to puke. Why are fountains connected to the bathrooms water source???

In almost every U.S. facility, the water leading to toilets is perfectly clean and drinkable, and comes from the same source as all the other water in the system.

There are some rare dual systems where partially-cleaned water (often called "gray water") is used for flushing toilets and watering lawns, but not for drinking, cooking, laundering, or bathing.

Otherwise--it's all from the same source, all the time.

Water fountains are meant to be connected to the mains water supply. This is because when the water is direct from its source, it is at its cleanest.

Bathroom water supply usually comes from the gravity tank, which is fed from the mains. As the water could well have been sitting in the tank for days on end, you don't know what condition it's in. Furthermore, you really don't know (or want to know) what's gone into that tank.

actually, it is that the 2 are connected to the same source - the water pipes.

Relatively few buildings have multiple water systems, and that is typically because they have decided to use a water softener. but it is STILL water from the same city or county water systems.
