My Rotteweiler is good around kids (Really!!!). Large and Medium dogs are best with children. Small dogs tend to be a bit rowdy and dont take well to rough housing. The most important part no matter what, is how you raise your dog. It is also best to get a puppy depending on how small your children are because older dogs really dont like to have their ears or tails pulled etc.. which can result in biting. You know your children better than I do, so think about what they can handle too! Mutts are great dogs...and if you get one from the pound, you'll be saving their life, while you brighten your childs with a wonderful new pet. Unless you are an experienced dog owner, I do not recomment Collies. I highly recommend mutts.

How old are the children? Many dogs, with appropriate training and the proper environment, can be good with children. Just make sure that you have time for the dog and the ability to supervise any dog with young children at all times. Most importantly is to do breed research to get an understanding of what a dog you're interested in was bred to do and to make sure that your home environment is suitable.

Having said all that, if an Akita is good enough to guard the children of Japanese nobles. . . Unless the kids are old enough to actually train the dog themselves, I would recommend against the herding breeds, particularly heelers (not just Heelers, but Corgi's, etc., too). Did I mention appropriate training?! - g^2

If you're not a serious dog owner get a lab. Other breeds are great but require work to integrate with children. The dog bonds with family in a pack mentality and you have to establish the pack with the dog. Protective dogs like German Shepards and Rottweilers are great but only if you can manage them. Dogs are bred for temperament specific reasons and if your are the lazy owner labs are a good choice in most cases.

some of the best dogs we've had when our kids were younger have been mutts. sheltered or resued dogs want and need good homes with lots of love in them. at 1st they may seem skittish, or shy, or scared, but after a week or so of tlc they come around. not ALL sheltered dogs are good with kids, we were lucky and only had to return one dog after we found it snapping at them. so many full breeds can be over bred, making them a little intense around youngin's. good luck in your future as a pet owner!

I have to agree with the others that said golden retrievers. I had one and he was patient with all kids and let them pet him. Collies and australian shepherds are also good. I have a mini pin now and he likes kids but he will jump on little kids so he really does best with kids age 8 or older.

For kids, You can't beat Golden Retrievers!!! They're extremely Good-Natured, Beautiful, Smart & Highly-Trainable, Loving & Loyal pets...The only breed I've personally seen that Never nip @ little-ones who pull their tail, pour liquids or foods on them...or anything else that might trigger attacks by less-friendly breeds.

A neopolitian mastiff is friendly but it gets a li'll too huge for a young kid. if your kids are over 10 it should be ok.

warning: they are extremely lazy so they may not keep up to the enthusiasm of your kids.
