FreeBSD is a variant of the UNIX Operating System.
It can be used on servers or desktops/laptops
Installing it is not for a novice.
But there is a version of FreeBSD that has a graphical installation. http://www.pcbsd.org/index.php?p=learnhome
You can download the CD ISO(image of a CD) which you can burn onto a CD.
OpenBSD http://www.openbsd.org/
NetBSD http://www.netbsd.org/

are other BSD variants.
