In religion and ethics, evil refers to the "bad" aspects of the behaviour and reasoning of human beings —those which are deliberately void of conscience, and show a wanton desire for destruction.
The definition of what is considered "evil" otherwise may differ according to point of view. In the Western world, some philosophers reject the idea of evil, Plato, for example, argued that that which we call evil is merely ignorance, and that which we call good is merely that which everyone desires.
The duality of 'good versus evil' is expressed, in some form or another, by many cultures. Those who believe in the duality theory of evil believe that evil cannot exist without good, nor good without evil, as they are both objective states and opposite ends of the same scale.

here's two take on it:
dictionary:
In religion and ethics, evil refers to the "bad" aspects of the behaviour and reasoning of human beings —those which are deliberately void of conscience, and show a wanton desire for destruction. In most cultures, the word is used to describe acts, thoughts, and ideas which are thought to (either directly or causally) bring about affliction and death —the opposite of goodness, which itself refers to aspects which are life-affirming, peaceful, and constructive. Aspects regarded as "evil" are thought of as immoral, corrupt, corrupting, inhumane, selfish, and wicked.
My view:
a misfortune......something anyone and anything can cause but cannot exist without something good being somewhere near by
evil.....something you have to deal with whether it is intangible or real something that could be anything since it defintion is not yet quite defined

Evil is anything that subverts God's design. This is a religious term and should be answered in religious principals.
When Satan set himself against God, he tried to take over heaven directly. He lost that battle and God did not act against him. He simply didn't have the numbers to overthrow heaven. When he was cast down from heaven, he learned something about God's strength and its not something he can come close to doing anything about. So he does the very worst against God that is left to him. He attacks what God loves. Namely, us.
If he can't destroy us directly he will infect us with self will. Self will is what drove him to attack God in the first place. If he sees an opportunity to do more damage by using us to infect one another, he will do that instead of destroying us directly.

Evil is disorder; it's much easier to give in to the calling of instinct than it is to be altruistic. Altruism is a choice and evil a default.
