I have braces right now. Im wondering ...........................I know my top and bottom front teeth are getting straighter, and the front of my smile is getting wider. Is my palate actually getting wider too?

Your palate will not get wider, unless they put a spreader in your mouth. My old girlfriend had one, and she had to twist this key three turns every day. Used to give her headaches.

I surmise that it is an illusion.

If the orthodontist wants to widen your palate then they will use an expander as ours did on one of our children. To explain what an expander is for those who are interested...it is an x shaped bar with a keyhole that mounts between your upper teeth. You have to turn the key for 2 weeks then they check. If they are happy then they glue the keyhole and the expander remains on for 6 months. This actually breaks the seam where the bone fused and then new bone is formed to fill in the gap within the next 6 months. The same process happens when a tooth is moved. The bone tissue is compacted on one side and a gap forms on the other that remains until new bone tissue forms. This is why it is so important to wear your retainer. By the way, you are supposed to keep your retainers and put them on once a week for the rest of your life to keep your teeth aligned. Teeth move even after braces. I had mine 25 years ago and just got new retainers from my orthodontist last year. He was quite pleased to see that my teeth looked like i had just had the braces removed after all those years!

I have had braces and I needed a special plate that widened my palate as well. Which was extremely painful. Depends on you mouth size and bite. Good luck and you will be greatful for a nice smile.
