I have heard that if you take regular table salt and pour it all over the pelt. Letting it dry in the sun for several days that this works. You have to Nail the pelt to a piece of wood first. Fur side down!

RE:
How would you preserve a squirrel pelt?
How would I go about preserving a squirrel pelt without going to a professional taxidermist or anything? I would rather not go out and dump a ton of money on a kit or anything. Just something simple that would keep the pelt from rotting or anything. Any ideas would be really helpful. I'd...

Why would you want to preserve a squirrel pelt? But I guess I would try salt.

If you want to tan the hide google tanning hides. there are tons of places to get the info on brain tanning, and other tanning processes.. Salt will preserve it for a time until you have time to work it.
inside out over a form scrap the fat and junk off the hide.
What do you want the squirrel hide for? Do you have more then one or just novelty and what to see how to "Do it"?
I'd be inclined to pitch the squirrel and go for a deer skin..

As a kid , I "preserved" the hide of a weasel. Following the advice of granfdfather(1904-1971) Stretch tightly on board w/nails, fur side down. Remove all traces of meat from hide, appearing to scrape or shave all rottable debris, wash -cleaning back of hide , should be clean "like hands" ('member from g"Gr-dad") next put layer of salt(Yup!Plain old table salt) on pelt! Watch! One 1/8th" layer should be enough, but if skin's not cleaned well enough, may need to add more salt in problem areas. Place outdoors away from loved ones--Give it 1-2 week's time, will be cured enough to keep in house (no smell). Will work on snake skin too. ( Snake will be stiff) can work oils into back of fur, causes scales to fall off on snake This is old time/old hills. Good Luck.

People use salt and stuff. I found out the best way to preserve it is too first soak it in antifreeze for three days. Then let it dry out and work it so that it gets soft. The antifreeze is one chemical several taxidermy will use.

skin animal
stretch pelt
scrape gently, to get meat/fat off of leather, be careful, because it is really easy to cut too deep and go all the way through
rinse w/ a damp washcloth
salt heavily
dry

I do alot of trapping and all we do is streatch the hide over a wood frame and let it dry not in the sun in the shade it will only take 24 hours to dry it out and work the hardened leather till it is soft and supple.
