Meralgia Paresthetica is entrapment (compressing) of a nerve that gives sensation to the thigh. My chiropractor diagnosed me due to symptoms of burning/numbness on the top outer portion of one thigh (MP is generally one-sided.) I also looked MP up online & it's exactly me!

I've had MP for 4-5 years, but it's been on-and-off, and flare-ups were mild & rare. It got worse when I got a laptop and started using it w/ my legs crossed ("Indian style") & the laptop flat on my groin/abdomen. My research says hyper-extended hips & groin pressure can make it worse, so I did everything wrong! :( I also squatted too much recently while gardening, which caused more trouble.

Often, no cause for MP is found. In rare cases, there's serious disc problems of the lower spine, so I'm going to have that checked by an M.D., tho I'm sure I'd have lots of back pain in that case, & I don't. :)

I feel very isolated with this condition. :( I also hope it's not permanent! Anyone else have it? How are you?

OOPS! :) The answer from Sami below reminds me I forgot to mention an important piece of info. I'm 5'7" & weigh 120. I've learned that being overweight and/or pregnant can aggravate MP, but neither of those applies to me, so losing weight wouldn't help.

I'm trying various remedies: resting my hips/legs a lot, use good posture, use my laptop on a table, not sit cross-legged anymore, not squat when gardening or cleaning, etc. But I'm worried I have permanent nerve damage, since it's taking what seems to be "too long" to clear up after the big flare-up. But I guess it takes time. Hopefully more MP sufferers will read this, so we can swap info & advice. I still feel so isolated with this! :(

Consider taking up yoga as it will help with your flexibility. Also consider looking into trigger point therapy. I just started myself with trigger point therapy as I recently developed some numbness in my hands and fingers. It involves self-massage and can help many people with their problems. The name of this book is :
THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK by
CLAIR DAVIES.

You can order through Amazon, get it at the library or go to a bookstore and buy it.

Meralgia paresthetica is a clinically recognisable syndrome with no special involvement that is detected objectively.
Keeping the hips in resting position relieves it. It is a self limiting and losing weight gives better relief.
