Do what you want to do. It's your life and you have to live it. Don't be the one who looks back at your life 20 years from now and says, "what if?"

You should tell us what the 2 options are so we can give better advice but here it goes. My daughter wants to be a fashion designer, I advised her to get a "real" job first, something in business and do her designing on the side, that way if it takes off great if not she won't starve. Plus I also explained that your passion may become a nightmare if you are trying to pay the bills with it, so that is another reason to keep it as a hobby unless it takes off. Now if the 2 jobs are both jobs with a lot of hiring potential, then research both, maybe intern at each of them for a couple of months, then sit down with parents and tell them your decision. I think if they see that you have thought it completely through, and tried on both professions they have no choice but to respect your decision.

If you do what makes you happy and they love you, that will make them happy, too.

If you do what they want and it makes you miserable but makes them happy, then they do not really love you...

Maybe there are reasons they are giving you this advice - discuss it with them and really consider what they are saying.

Then, absolutely, make your own decision - they will be more likely to support you from the beginning if you all sit down and understand each other first.

You do not have to agree - just make clear to each other that you really hear what the other person is saying. But do not budge on the idea that this is your decision and yours alone.

If they present an ultimatum, be sure you have a plan to get by without their financial/emotional or other types of support before stating your final decision.

Good Luck! I think you will do great. If you are stuck on how to start a discussion about it all, maybe print out your question and the answers, give them a copy and start from there.

You'll never be happy doing something that someone else wants you to do. This is your LIFE think of all the years that you'll be forced to work in the profession that your parents pick. Mind you, it's better to get an education than run off to hollywood and become an actor, but if you want to do something other than what your parents want (want to go into law instead of medicine for example) talk to them about it. YOU have to live the life, not your parents...you only get one shot in this world, and you don't want regrets.

as long as it is reasonable and you arent chasing after the dream of being a rock star then you do what you want to do. PERIOD. Dont live your life for someone else. Sure you could work hard at something your heart isnt in... but you arent gonna like it and this day and age, there is basically no such thing as full retirement unless you are lucky. So do what You want to do because 50 years of a job you hate would be horrible!!!!!

It's better to choose the career you want and satisfies YOU. maybe your paretns are certainly worried about your future but the profession you will choose must be the one that makes you happy because after all you will be the one doing the work and it should make you happy.. it's your life and i know your parents care for you but really the better thing to do is explain to them why you want a certain profession and that it's something that pleases you..
It's your choice...

Good luck

Truthfully, you need to go with the career you are most interested in doing. If you follow the one your parents have selected for you, would you truly be happy? You may wind up feeling, down the road, regrets that you are now stuck in this career and you never took the chance to try the one you really wanted. I agree, I don't believe your parents would ever push you in the wrong direction, but I do believe they want you to be happy, too.

This is a tuff call, your parents should be supportative either way. But you still have to do whats right for you. Your parents will only look out for whats best for you, so if you career choice is say professional grocery bagger, maybe listen to them.

It's better to tell your parents what proffession you like and want to take. Explain to them how you really feel.
Take the time to talk to them about it and explain to them that you really want that career for your future.
Thank them for everything they've done for you but that you wish for them to let you make your own decision in this important step in your life.
Tell them that it's better to do the proffession that you love so that you will do it with joy and never get bored of it.
Just, don't get mad or scream while you're talking to them, that will make it harder for them to listen.
Good Luck!
