Well, how many programs are there installed into your computer otherwise from the Windows XP?? You can take off programs at startup by Pressing "Start" > "Run" > and typing, msconfig [ENTER]
Goto Startup tab, and take off the programs that you don't need. It makes a faster bootup. After that you can do a scandisk, and afterwards, you can defrag your computer.
Also, You can Uninstall all the programs that you don't need.
And Last but not least, the revolutions per minute of your Hard Drive also Matter, mine which is 70 RPM, is quite fast, how much is yours, that is the velocity of your Hard Drive.

Well when your computer is running slow with an older OS, installing a new one isn't going to fix it, if anything it will make it slower. There is a reason why people make better computers, it's to be able to run these better, bigger and faster OS's. I suggest getting a new computer. Something that has atleast a 2.0 Ghz processor with atleast 256 Mb RAM and decent graphics card.

that is because ur comp still has the same amount of ram (it is the temporary memory a comp takes to open programs n stuff (not same stuff ) ). so go to control pannel, and clikc on system, and then int hy general tab it will say ram at thy bottom. u recomend have at least 512 mb of ram, 256 mb is slow, probly what u have. i have 1 gb (1024 mb) and it is nice n fast no problems 4 me. go to a store and buy antoher ram card to put in ur comp
o and thy previous os has nothing to do with it cus u already whiped it off ur hard drive.
o yeah and uninstalling programs wont speed it up, and deleting things wont speed it up, yes ending processes will speed it up, but u have to do that everytime u boot then, and that is a pain cus things turn on for a reason (as in u use processes)

Responding to doggoldcoin's response....
70 RPM is sloooooow. My hdd is 7200.... I believe you are mistaken.
More RAM would be nice, but you may want to do a clean install of windows in which you format the hard drive and reinstall from scratch. (Restores the registry and removes viruses.)
About viruses...
You may have an infected computer even thought there may be no signs except it being slower. Invest in an antivirus if you do not have one, or get a free one such as Avast.
