Sadly, a lot of Bible thumpers get so intertwined in their teaching that they forget a little thing called "tact". Meaning, they are so concerned about fulfilling laws and rules that they forget people have feelings and questions and doubts. It becomes a mission of forcing people to obey Jesus Christ before allowing them to first believe in Him.
I am a youth pastor, and I feel very strongly that we need to speak the truth in love. Meaning, yeah I believe some things that maybe not everyone will agree with. But, I agree to respect your difference in beliefs and keep an open line of communication regarding them. All I ask is that you respect me in the same way - don't bash me because I believe something different than you. And hey - maybe we can both learn something.

I think that phenomenon is strictly related to the protestantism in the USA, I live in Europe and I have not seen such phenomenon here.
Main reason probably is that people are using bible for personal interests and lifting their ego. So when you are in conversation and are an egotistical bastard you must be winner no matter what.
They are using Sacred scripture depending of the situation ,and love to thump with it on neighbors head, but they would do the same if it was Koran or Talmud or some other sacred scripture.
They should first visit a good psychiatrist, and have few constructive sessions.

Contrary to what Batman thinks, Bible thumpers aren't hateful people. I've found many of them to be enthusiastic about their beliefs, and sometimes that enthusiasm puts people off. For the Christian who is hateful, it's really too bad, because that's not the example that Christ provided. But I would also like to point out that Christians are a work in progress, some people are just further along in the process than others. Interestingly though, when Jesus told the Disciples to go into the surrounding villages to spread the Gospel, He instructed them to shake the dust from their sandals if the people in a particular village didn't want to hear about it. In much the same way, I think we Christians tend to forget that, and force ideas on people who aren't receptive to them. I think that's understandable given that what's at stake.

I have struggled with such a question myself for so long. To them, I think, it has gotten past the point of just believing and having faith. To them it is a matter of right and wrong. They are right and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong. Of my stidies of varying religions, I have found that one common thread within all of them is a sense of community. Practically everyone has a desire to belong in some form or another. To introduce an element that would possibly disrupt their way of thinking and make them feel like they are a part of the wrong "crowd" would be absolutly shattering to their own existence as they know it. Their world would come crashing down around them if they were to become isolated from their community and if they started doubting their own beliefs because they began to ponder the notion that there might be another truth. They would begin to doubt their own self worth because they might be wrong.
Trust me......its not an easy thing to go through.

I am what you would call a "Bible thumper" I guess and I just wanted you to know that I agree with you!! Christians should not be hateful in anyway. If they truly want to be like Christ, which is the real meaning of the word "christian" Jesus was never mean or nasty to anyone!! I am so sorry that all the Christians you have met have been so mean!! You should not judge anyone but I just wish they had not made you think we are all like that!! But I guess we are all still human after all! So I will pray that you will never have to be treated like that again!!

That's a hateful thing to say. Before you and your atheist friends post such nonesense, you should ask yourself
1) Is it true?
2)Is it kind? and
3) Is it necessary?
Since you don't have the same moral compass as the rest of us, this will help you to make the world a better place.
have a nice day

I'm not sure hateful is the right word to use. The bible teaches to love in the face of hate so they shouldn't speak out of hate if they want to practice what they preach. In my opinion it's okay to disagree with someone as long as you don't force your belifs on them.
People that force their belifs are generally brainwashed and lack tolerance and respect. It's just a human condition i guess... In a way it's similar to how your disrespect them by useing a slang term like "bible thumpers". They lack tolerance and respect for what you believe and you lack tolerance and respect for them.
The real question is why do so many hate what they don't agree with?

I understand your frustration and disappointment and have also seen it first-hand. However, please do not generalise. There are many 'bible thumpers' that are actually kind and respectful towards people who do not agree with them. It takes true practice and understanding of one of fundamental value of Christianity (love thy neighbour as you love yourself). However, I also believe that many religious people are provoked to such extend that they turn nasty, because their human tempers are lit. I don't blame some for getting agitated, but I do think it takes a skill NOT to be drawn into arguments that lead nowhere. :) Like this one ;)

It is not so much they are hateful, they are just sometimes misguided. Unfourtunatly some of them do not seem to understand that there is a time and a place for everything, and sometimes they forget this. After all it is quoted in the Bible, I beleve in the book of songs, but I could be wrong.
