He is shown that way because the first translation of the Bible was the King James version. Sorry to sound Judge-mental, but That was the way the men looked at that time in England. I know that Jesus was not anything like those silly pictures. I mean really, he would definitely have to have been a big beefy man and the people of the Jewish descent, let's face it, had woolly thick hair. I see him as a dark skinned powerful human who was as gentle as a lamb and as strong as a ox. How else could he have been in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights after his baptism with no provisions or shelter?

Actually, it makes more sense if Jesus was tanned with a beard and thick dark hair with dark eyes and strong features. He was a Jew from the Middle East, so it makes sense that he looked like a Jew from the Middle East.

To combine some of these answers:

He is as you depict him to be, it's the reason that white people made the movies, and drew the paintings. Also, it is true that he is a Jew, and thus, is more than likely white.

All I know for sure, is that he is perfect in his appearance.

Jesus was and is the Son of God and Mary, a simple Jewish girl from Israel. People of Jewish tradition are from one of 12 tribes of Israel historically. As such each tribe has unique characteristics which can be attributed to their direct ancestry and lineage. Skin color and hair type is only one of the variabilities among the tribes. The fact is we do not really know. Yet I do sermise by trying to analize what I do know. And all that is is based on life experience: I have a number of friends who are Jewish and from Israel. They are caucasian appearing, as are a number of their Jewish friends and community. That said it does not mean Jesus is, but it woks or me.

It would make more sense if He was depicted as a Jew, since that's what He was. He was Hebrew.

He was caucasian, as Egyptians are. He was not white. He also was not black as some others have tried to portray Him. Blacks originated from sub-Saharan Africa. Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
