This is for my fellow waiters and waitresses out there.

When you dine out at a restaurant, do you evaluate your server's performance? Point out (either to yourself, the server, or your table) what they are doing wrong or if they do something really good?

If you do make notes to yourself, do you inform them or keep it to yourself? Do you leave the face down/face up penny?

As a former server, the answer is yes. People don't just dine out for the food; they can get that at home. The attitude and performance of the server is a critical factor in the enjoyment of the dining experience. It's easy to spot the server who's happy with his/her job vs. the one who's simply plodding along and could care less about anything but getting off work to go party.

I judge service all of the time. I talk about it at the table if I am sitting with others from the biz.

Usually, though, I tip well even if the service is bad. If the service is bad enough for a low/no tip, then I discuss the problem with the manager first. Usually, managers want to know if there is a service problem, and they will do what they can to make you happy.

I never blame kitchen delays on the server, either.

I have found that the best tippers are strippers. They have to deal with so much stuff to get tips. I think there should be solidarity among people who work for tips.

Definitely - all the little details I know I focus on when I give exceptional service I look for when I go out. Not in a mean-spirited way, but just in interest. However, I always tip at least 20%, unless the server was intentionally rude or something -- it's good waitress karma :)

Yes. I did when I was waitressing. I never made comments to the actual waiter/ waitress, but I did take mental notes. The only time I won't tip is when the service is blatantly poor.

waitressing has definetly made me a more picky tipper... for good service im more generous but for poor service im more stingy... but i have also noticed that i help them clean the table by placing all unused items to the end of the table... i think overall waitressing has made a more observant customer

YES, and it drives my husband crazy!! I don't leave a penny and I don't tell them, unless I happen to know them or know their supervisors, I will make a comment about it. I just reflect it in my tip, which my husband says that I tip too much anyway.

Oh, yes. All the time. I usually keep my thoughts to myself, though. Most people I know don't really care, not having worked in restaurants themselves.

I do! I don't wait tables anymore but I still do it. I hate it! I can't just enjoy going out anymore because I can always find ways that they could do their job better.
