In Western cultures a wedding ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger. According to tradition, the wedding ring is worn on the left ring finger because the vein in the left ring finger was believed to be directly connected to the heart, a symbol of love. This belief is thought to have originated in ancient Egypt.

The blood in the veins of your left hand have just come from your heart.
Also, most people are right handed, so having the ring on the left means it is less likely to catch on things while you're working, which could risk the loss of the ring or even of the finger.
If you're left-handed or for some reason really hate it being there, just wear it on the other one. You will have to put up with people asking why you do it, but what matters is that you're faithful to your fiance/spouse. Not so much which finger you wear the ring on!

It's a tradition to wear your wedding band on your left hand ring finger because there is a direct line (through a vein) to your heart. Women were their wedding band before their engagement ring for this same reason. Some single women pride themselves on being independent and buy themselves a diamond ring to be worn on their right hand ring finger as a badge of honor, pride respect...etc etc etc. It's becoming quite popular lately and many jewlers sell these special right hand diamonds. (although there's nothing really special about them....it's just another diamond ring) Anyhow...nothing says you have to follow tradition. Do it your way and wear your wedding band on any finger you wish. As long as you like it and it means something to you...well that's all that really matters. Best of luck to you and yours!

The custom started because it was believed that the vein left ring finger was connected directly to the heart. Therefore placing the ring on that finger symbolized connecting to the heart.

You wear it on your left hand finger and the vein in your left hand fingers leads up to your heart. Does that make sense? Else it is just an old family tradition.........
