GSP's are high drive dogs. They need a lot of physical activity and mental stimulation. In my experience, high drive dogs settle down around 4 years old. It's tough because you need to do the majority of their training before that age. You have to have a lot of patience and consistency to get through this. When they do mature and settle down, high drive dogs will out perform any other dog. Give this dog something to do - hunting, agility, flyball - anything. You will be glad you did.

The German Shorthaired Pointer is very energetic, smart and willing to please. Cheerful and friendly, he likes children. Loyal and protective, he loves all family members equally, especially if they are carrying the leash, car key, gun or Frisbee.
They are very people-oriented, and not happy if isolated from the family. If exercised sufficiently once or twice a day, the German Shorthaired Pointer makes a very agreeable family companion.
If left to his own devices for long periods without exercise or companionship, he can become destructive and nervous. Males tend to be more outgoing and are more aggressive hunters than females. Females tend to be less dominant.
Energy levels vary somewhat, as litters bred for high performance field competition may require more activity than the average Shorthair. If raised with other dogs and cats from puppyhood, the German Shorthaired Pointer does quite well; however, he is a hunting dog by nature.
This breed likes to bark and they are reserved with strangers

There's something a lot of dog trainers call "getting their brain", which is when a dog has mentally matured to the point of being less hyper. It's somewhere around two or three years of age (some breeds, like Labs, seem to be closer to three). Also, like humans, males seem to take longer to get there than females. Is he neutered? The boys can smell a female dog (can't use the b-word?! - it's quite proper in this context. . .) in heat from quite a distance, and that's not going to help in the settling down department. Give him another year and be very patient with him. Have you taken him to dog-friendly training classes? Basic obedience skills are very helpful with both the dog's basic behavior and your ability to positively influence him. - g^2

Eventually he will when he is about 5 years! You can help him settle by training him and giving him a purpose to his life. Prevents him from getting bored too.
