The most well-known flightless birds are the ostrich and the emu, both from Australia. Another Australian native that cannot fly is the cassowary, and there are two flightless birds from New Zealand: the kiwi and the kakapo (a type of parrot). A flightless bird from South America is the rhea, which is similar in many ways to the ostrich. And then there are birds that only “fly” underwater: penguins!

Many people think that all birds fly, but more than 20 types of birds cannot fly at all! Millions of years ago, most birds flew in order to find food and escape from predators. Predators are animals that hunt other animals. Some birds, however, lived in places with few or no predators. There was plenty of food on the ground or in the water. These birds did not need to fly, so they flew less and less often. Over time, they lost their ability to fly and became flightless birds.

Emu The emu is a large, flightless Australian bird. The emus of Australia are the second largest bird. They can grow to 6 feet tall and weigh 100 pounds. Emus are also fast runners.
They live in smaller flocks on the dry plains and deserts in Australia. They feed on leaves, grass, and insects. Father emus are the caregivers -- they build the nests, incubate the eggs and raise the babies until they are able to take care of themselves.

ostriches, and the ostrich can run up to 64 km per hour The largest living bird is the ostrich which can be as big as 8 feet tall and 330 pounds. The ostrich relies on its speed, size and strong kick rather than flight for safety. An ostrich can kill a person with one kick and can run up to 40 miles per hour. Ostriches live in flocks in dry parts of Africa. Flocks can have as many as 600 birds in them.

Ostriches are vegetarian and spend much of their time searching out water.

Common Rhea The Common Rhea or Nandu is a large, flightless bird from South America. The Rhea of South America, the Kakapo of New Zealand and the Cassowary of Australia and New Guinea are also flightless birds. A number of extinct birds were also flightless, including the Dodo of Mauritius and the Moa and Dinornis of New Zealand. Nandu The Nandu or Common Rhea is a large, flightless bird from South America.

Cassowary A huge, flightless bird from Australia with a helmet-like crest on its head. The cassowary has a hard crown that acts as a helmet

Penguin Penguins are birds that swim very well but cannot fly.penguins may not be designed for flying, but their bodies have a variety of adaptations necessary for survival. the penguin has solid bones for diving

Emperor Penguin The largest penguin; it lives on ice packs in Antarctica.

Rockhopper Penguin A small, aggressive, crested penguin.

Jackass Penguin A small penguin from off the coast of southern Africa.

Dinornis The largest bird that ever lived. This flightless bird is extinct, but it lived in New Zealand until the early 1800's.

Dodo The dodo is an extinct, flightless bird that lived on an island in the Indian Ocean near Africa.

Kiwi A chicken-sized insectivore from New Zealand; the smallest ratite. The New Zealand Kiwi has nothing to do with kiwifruit. It lives in moist forests and uses its long, bendable bill to poke around the ground in search of worms.
Unlike many of the other flightless birds, the kiwi is not very large. It's only about a foot and a half long. To avoid predators, the kiwi hides during the day and comes out at night to search for food.
The kiwi has fine feathers that make it look almost furry. It has no tail feathers and its wings are so small they're typically not very easy to see.

Moa A huge, extinct, flightless bird from New Zealand.

Kakapo A large, flightless, nocturnal, solitary parrot from New Zealand.

also chickens and turkeys do not fly, but ducks do fly.... else why would duck hunting be a sport if they didn't?

*also, don't worry about what some guy sitting around in his underwear has to say about your grammar, as most of us on here understand that not everyone on here asking questions is from the usa and speaks fluent English... (i understood what you meant)

Domesticated farm ducks can't fly. Well, maybe a few feet above the ground for a very short space, but they can't get up into the sky like wild ducks.
