There is no Sales Tax in Oregon, potentially i can save $5000 to $6000 by not paying the sales tax. I even have a friend who i can put down as the local resident address in Oregon. However, my home is in San Francisco.

If you have an address and Oregon license to register it in Oregon first. Then you will have to register it again, get a CA license again, and smog it, in California if you want to live and drive in CA. Only work around on license and registration is if you are in the military and not from CA, but stationed in CA.

You have to be a resident of Oregon in order to avoid paying the sales tax on the car. You will be taxed according to where you register the car.

You WILL pay California sales tax (there "aint no way CA is going to pass that up!!). They "will get you" when you go to register the vehicle in CA, you will pay sales tax on the purchase price at that time just as if you had purchased the car in a CA dealership. In fact, you will pay the rate of the county where you reside.

In my state you pay the tax on the purchase price of the car when you get your plates. So if you were to buy the car in Oregon you would pay sales tax in California on the purchase price of the car.

But I can not say for sure--that is how it works in Nebraska and Iowa

I purchased a car in California and live in Nevada and Nevada wanted sales tax. I drove that car for 45,000 miles without plates. Finally sold it and purchased the next car in Nevada. My sales tax is included in my car payments, so my registration was still 345 bucks and 24 hours community service. LOL

I do believe the story goes...

You have to actually reside in Oregon. With proof.

no. The vehicle must be registered in the county where you live, and that includes paying the taxes on it. It is illegal to register it in another state and you could face a large fine

Here's a wild Idea you might want to check into.....Buy the car....register it in oregon...sell it to your friend...then have him sell it back to you but put gift on the deed when registering it in CA.
