Technology. Originally the screens were nearly circular as well, circa 1950. The electron gun in the back of the TV tube is a bit like a spray can spraying paint - the corners are harder to get to. But we want a flat picture, so engineers have eventually come up with ways to get the electrons into the corners even though they're further away. Of course no sooner has this been done than other technologies are superseding CRT, like TFT and plasma.

The original curving screens were necessary to have a sharp picture. Now there are several ways to get a flat screen, such as rear projection, LCD and plasma screens. Flat screens can now be thinner and brighter than before. Soon old style TV tubes will be phased out all together.
;-D Enjoy your new flat screen! I wish I had one!

Back then the technology was not developed to make a screen flat. Basically it used to be a cathod ray tube (CRT). Now we have the technology so they dont need to be curved.

Now people buy flat tv screens than curved so they tend to make flat screens.

with a curve, all points on the screen are equidistant to the diode. imagine the earth. the earth is curved and all points on the earth are equidistant from the earth's core.

with flat screens, improved technology is needed to compensate for the extra distance, which we now have, but we didn't when TVs first came out
