Depeding on your setting:

"Hola, como estas?" [pronounced with an accent on the first o in como and the a in estas] -- someone close to you.
"Hola, como esta (usted)?" (usted not necessarily needed) someone that's not close or an elder (its the respectful way of asking)
"Hola, como estan?" [accent on the a in estan] to more than one person
"Hola, como estais?" [accent on the ai in estais] to more than one person, used mainly in spain and hardly used in south america and mexico.

You can also try:
"Hola, que tal?" for someone close by, it's more informal, and used more in spain.
"Hola, que paso? (with the accent on the o in paso)" meaning more of Hi, what's happening?
