When I was just a little girl, my family came to the U.S.A from Portugal, and we learned to speak English just fine, with the exception of our accents. My parents told my siblings and I that our accents would fade with time and we would speak just like all the other American children. I am in my 20's now. My siblings (I believe all of them) have indeed faded out their accents for the most part. I have not.

I'm just wondering why my accent has not diminished, though most of my family's accents have.

Yes, my family did still speak Portuguese when we came to the U.S.A. My mother and father both still have their accents.

I'm not worrying about it! Believe me, I don't want to get rid of my accent (men love it!). I'm just curious as to why mine hasn't faded but my siblings' accents have faded.

Because you live in USA does not mean you have too talk like them.
You come from Portugal so be proud of where you born, we are unique by the place we are and nothing have to change that but don't be too proud because everything with excess is bad for you (remember the NAZIS)
USA is a good country because of people like you and me, not just for the people who born there

I know people who have lived in the US for over 20 years and still speak with their foreign accent. Embrace it, don't worry about it. Your accent will always be something that makes you unique.

You may want to consult with a accent coach to improve your English. But why to get rid off your accent that makes you special?

my mom has lived in the US for more than half her life and she still has her spanish accent as well as my dad. my mom's accent has started to fade since she got here to the US but i'm sure that with time yours will start to fade also..your still really young and have many many years ahead so i wouldn't worry about it. in fact, i'd love to have your accent.

maybe since you were around your parents so much you picked up your accent from them...i would assume that your parents have an accent since you moved when you were a little girl they were there for a long long time...they also probably spoke portugese while they were in U.S.A. since it is their first language and all.....

Why worry about it? Accents are sexy.
