When I was younger, my mouth & tongue burned slightly if I ate raw pineapple or drank the juice, but I never knew that wasn't supposed to happen so it didn't seem "wrong". By the time I began college, I realized it WAS wrong.
Not only would my mouth & tongue burn and get sore (but NOT swell, fortunately), but I'd also have a severe stomach ache for about 2 hours, stomach/intestinal cramps, sometimes nausea, sometimes a little headache, and an overall feeling of "sick." (Maybe the runs too!)
If I eat cooked pineapple (i.e. Chinese sweet & sour pork, or pineapple upside-down cake), I don't get sick, interestingly enough.
I suspect the allergen is bromelain, a pineapple-specific enzyme, so maybe this gets destroyed during cooking? I know pineapple is high in salicylates, but that's not a problem for me, since I eat many other fruits high in that, with no probs. I also take aspirin with no probs.
Anyhoo, if you have ANY pineapple sensitivities/allergies, please share them! :)

My son is VERY allergic to fresh pineapple. If it`s cooked, he can eat it ..and if it`s frozen, like in sorbet,he can eat it. His mouth, lips and tongue swell up..in fact, his throat almost closes shut,it`s very scary to see.He knows to keep away from it, now.The Doctor we saw DID say it was bromelain! He also said it could be something that just goes away in time...OR..it could get WORSE in time..so , please, be careful! From my heart to yours....! : )

I too had severe allergic reactions to pineapple when I was younger. So much so that my throat would swell shut and I could hardly breathe. I'd break out in welts all over my body and my eyes would swell shut. And I loved the taste of pineapple so it was really hard to not have any, but it was too dangerous.
Then, when I was 18, my family took a vacation to Hawaii and the fresh cut pineapple stands were all over the place. It smelled so wonderful and my mouth started watering. I said to heck with it and had some.
Amazingly, I had NO bad reaction to it! I went on a total pineapple binge, had it everywhere we went while we were there - and never had any allergic symptoms at all.
Since then, I can eat all the pineapple I want and have no problems.
I don't know if I just outgrew the allergy, or maybe because the pineapple was fresh from the field (not processed in any way) - either way I no longer have the problem.
Good luck with your situation, I know what a bummer it is.

Um you should see an allergist specialist right away. Although pineapple is a pretty unique fruit other tropical fruits contain similar juices that could be what's making you break out. Also a doctor can give you an epi pen. In case your throat next time swells shut and you can't breath. You should not ignore this. Suddenly developing an allergy does happen but its not very common. Could be you are not allergic to pineapple at all but the pesticides and preservatives sprayed on the fresh fruit to keep it fresh longer.

oh man....
When I was younger I had BAD reactions to Pineapple. But, for a while I didn't know what caused it.
My lips would swell to 3X's normal size, then my cheeks would start and then my tounge. I couldn't even drink Pineapple soda with just 3% pineapple.
I stayed away from it for 5+ years, and now I can eat things / drink things with a little pineapple and have no probs. I haven't been ballsy enough tho to try an actual piece or anything. But I have been able to enjoy some mixed drinks made with it and chinese dishes that have it in it.
When I did have a reaction Benedryl worked for me. Tho when it was real bad it took several days. (I wouldn't even leave the house)

until recently i had only had pineapple --cooked-- sweet/sour pork, upside down cake-- limited contact. i have asthma [reducing symptoms as i age ] and seasonal hay fever, i recently started adding more fresh fruits to my diet a bit at a time as i always had some reactions when younger. BAM i started fresh pineapple -- bought and sliced and juiced from fresh and the reactions were almost immediate-- itchy mouth-tongue-skin-- throat discomfort as in my younger asthma days-- i stopped--waited two weeks and tried again-- all the same problems-- so pineapple is off my fruit list [ as are fresh bananas which cause similar results] i had had several sets of allergy tests over the years and after checking--NONE of them had pineapple tests-- i learned by my own experimenting. i still have an epi-pen for other allergies-- but pineapple was not that serious.--so i will continue only eating COOKED versions which are safe for me. ;-) 8-2015

I understand exactly where your coming from on this! I am the same way with bananas. (my mouth and throat seem to "itch" for hours) You aren't allergic to the fruit, but the pollen on the outside and even on the inside of the fruit. When the fruit is cooked (like in a cake or something) the pollen gets burned up. Not all fruit pollen is the same chemically, so that's why you may have the reaction just to pineapple.

This is not an allergy really, but if I smell it I think I am going to throw up. And if the smell stays I do! Never cared for the taste since I was a kid. Other fruit no problem just the pineapple.
