It seems to me that once the Islamists get control, anyone who disagrees must run for cover. I think it is an evidence that Islam fears the truth that they have to be so repressive.

Islamic societies are not governed by Islamist governments.
Just try to learn the type of governments being adopted at those societies, you will find they have nothing to do with Islam.
You will also find that most of them have been appointed and/or supported by force like USA, UK and France.
So , it is those government who do not reflect the true picture of Islam, ...
you people are so fast on passing a judgment when it comes to Islam or Muslims., it is simply because of the hate inside yourself which you are trying to hind but to bring out in such modern way of discussion, it is like a poison in a good meal.
I think you call that in you society, being hypocrites...!!!?? right?

You are obviously ignorant of history.
For about a thousand years, until around 1900, the Turks (the Ottoman Empire) had an advance society where science, free thought, philosophy and art flourished. The Ottomans offered peace and sanctuary to the jews while the christians across Europe were murdering, torturing and forcibly converting jews to christianity.
The Ottoman Empire fell when the combine imperialistic might of christian European nations ate away at its borders. Europe has never understood islam and seems less willing than ever.
And in case any are tempted to make idiotic remarks like "Saddam lover", I'm an atheist. I find *all* religion to be repugnant.

You have no real conception of Islam. Islam is a religion that shares much of its roots and history with Judiaism and Christianity. Developements in political science separated Christianity from Western government in Renaissance years.
Islam is in fact much more tolerant of other religions than the Christian states of the middle ages. Christians and Jews are allowed to live and practice their faith in Islamic countries, but Islam is the law so those non-Mulsims understand that breaking the law means subject to Islamic punishments.
Fundamentalist islamic states are harsh and inflexible because they are applying laws and rules passed down from over 1500 years ago to modern society. Islamic fundamentalist are reacting to what they feel is corruption and weakness in other states that claim to be morality and faith yet show no undertanding or tolerance for others.
Repression is a function of the PEOPLE in power regardless of their religion. Pinotchet, Peron. the white South Africans of the Apartheid era were easily as oppressive as some of the Islamic states of today. They were not painted as reliogious extremists because they were CHRISTIANS.

I believe you on the theory that a very Islamic authorities is a "loose" authorities. the authorities isn't there to stress human beings on each and every difficulty and there must be due procedure to enact or implement the guidelines. i trust that a very Islamic authorities ought to exist lower than a device like that chanced on interior usa of america... because the structure and breakup of authorities bypass. I am just writing here becasue you answered one question saying that Muhammad is the central figure of the Quran and Muslims I know who is the Central figure and who is not. for your information please read more and find out about the religion more. I am not saying you are a bad person. In quran Mohammad is mentioned on ly 4 times. does that say anything to you . Quran is mostly about what happened before Isalm not during.

Islam is where you can find a community that polygamy is allowed, justify the sinner by beheading, bethroting or daughter selling is still practiced, urging a member of community to suicide bombing is an act of heroism.... this is the community that is near similar to heaven :)

Theocracies tend to be like that. You can see it in Isreal , to a degree.
That is why the argument against same sex marriage shouldn't be based on religious belief. Its a dangerous precedent.
