I have just recieved my financial aid award letter. I still havent started school just yet. I will be a dependent, full-time student. I live with my mother and brother, or so I did at the time of applying for the aid. Now my question is my mother now has a boyfriend (just boyfriend, not married) and he now lives with us.My mothers boyfriend and my brother are going to buy a house together. Seeing as how we now will own a property and my moms boyfriend makes more money then her, will this affect my financial aid? Or will it not matter becuase neither my moms boyfriend or my brother's income have anything to do with me. . Im sorry if this doesn't make sense..lol

No, he is not a blood or law relative so no. It doesn't matter that they own a house. What matter is for next year, the only way you won't get the same amount of financial aid is if your mother makes more money for the next FAFSA year and if you have an income. However, you can always get stafford loans from the federal government regardless of how much money you make. Property is not included in the FAFSA. You only put their earnings, banks holdings and retirement accounts. Ignore the advice of the person who said to talk to your financial aid person. You want to give them as little information as possible.

ok, I'll take a stab at this, but I'm not sure I'll be 100% correct. Firstly...is your mom's boyfriend buying the home in HIS name? if so - this does not affect your income (ie, you and your parents...since you are still a dependent). If your mom's name is on the house, I'm not sure that would affect it either considering it's not an increase in income - which is the main thing they look at.
Secondly...if this did effect you, It wouldn't be until next year as they go off of last year's tax information. If you still wonder..you can go to the financial aid office at your school and talk to them about how/if this will affect your ability to qualify for financial aid in the future (which if it's federal loans you are getting, it most likely won't - if anything it might affect the amount you'll get per semester....grants are a different story).

I think you should talk to a financial aid advisor. Personally, I would not worry about it for this upcoming year b/c you filled this out befor he lived there. To be on the safe side and not get in any kind of financial trouble. I would definatly contact the financial aid people. The house isn't purchased yet and he in not your father or your primary care giver so I don't see how this could affect your aid.

If you need any help, seriously write me and I will help. And no, your financial status is supposed to be affected by last years income. Still, you may have other hurdles that will effect your financial status. Not because your family is purchasing a home.

As you will learn in college, there are no dumb questions. It should not affect your award. You should also consider the Pell grants.
It could be free money for your education.
