Durum Wheat Flour is pretty good, as are most wheat flours. It is best for making pasta.

The Flour Advisory Board in the UK: http://www.fabflour.co.uk/Freestyle.asp?PageID=237
Recommends it.
The European Sensory Network: http://www.esn-network.com/62.html
"Moreover, bread made from durum wheat flour can be kept fresh for a longer time than bread made from soft wheat flour."...Durum flour is milled from hard-grain durum wheat. It is yellower in colour compared with regular wheat flour. Durum wheat is not grown in Finland."
Nordic Recipe Archive: http://www.dlc.fi/~marianna/gourmet/i_flours.htm
"Durum flour is not usually used in baking, since its ability to produce strong gluten web is not the best possible. It is mainly used to make pasta doughs."

It seems to be more popular in Europe, but the USFDA doesn't seem to have any problems with it.
USFA: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/flgragui.html
"Whole wheat macaroni products are made from whole wheat flour, whole durum wheat flour."
According to: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3741/is_8_47/ai_55671916
"Bread loaves with a slightly nutty taste and a cream-colored interior could soon be baked largely from durum wheat flour. Durum is typically used in making pasta. But durum suited for breads would give growers a new market. ARS researchers are developing durum breeding lines for both kinds of products. Meanwhile, they devised a baking procedure to yield pan bread made mostly from durum."

So I think that using Durum Wheat Flour is best for making pasta, is widely accepted, and a better alternative than using white flour; it will be healthier for you. You could try and use it to make bread, but that may be a bit more difficult thing to do.

I don't think it's good OR bad, it's just flour made from a particular type of wheat called durum that is extra hard and I think contains less gluten than some other kinds. That is why it's used for pasta.
