The majority of people in New York are quite nice. It's a city where people are all friendly and respectful. I do not find the people in New York City to be rude or worse off than people in other cities. If anything I find people down south to be ruder to me because I'm Asian. But that's another story. The only time I can get angry in New York is when a tourist is walking in front of me, then suddenly stops because they want a picture of a neon sign. Please, if you plan to stop, move over to the side of the side walk or expect me to plow right over you.

Most people who live in Manhattan aren't from New York and are all their for work. We're not cocky because we live in New York, we are focused on our careers. People just don't know New York. They have stereotypes because New York is so fast, and their is so much money. Sometimes people talk smack about New York because they are intimidated to visit - the big buildings, all the people, traffic... many other excuses. But don't trash New York until you have been here.

Look at 9/11, if you weren't here, you didn't see how fast the city became a community and looked after one another. And that also happened during the black out, and even yesturday when that doctor tried to blow up his own apartment building. As well, when you visit, you can ask anyone you see how to get around the city because chances are, we were all once new to the city and unsure of how to commute.

It's a great city with great people.

I grew up in Buffalo,NY and now live in Denver ,Co. Buffalo is over 400 miles away from New York City, but not many people know their geography and as soon as someone finds out I am from "New York"(not),they are very standoffish.
I don't have a Coloradan accent if there is such a thing,I guess there is,because most "natives" that is what they call themselves here (for real),think I am from Michigan or Chicago..they don't dare even ask if I am from New York.
They ask if I am from the Midwest. People from Buffalo don't have the distinctive New York City accent,or any disticntive accent at all, actually it is pretty generic (thank god for that).
Most people especially people from Colorado don't like people from New York because they think New Yorkers are rude and arrogant. Reading this blog I see that the attitude is prevalent throughout different parts of the country ,interesting.
My take on it is that ,people from New York are very honest with their feelings and speak their mind, which by the way wouldn't be a bad idea if everyone was like that. People from New York are in touch with their feelings and tell you like it is,even from Buffalo.
I have found that people from around the country have a hard time dealing with honesty and speaking their mind and expressing themselves in a direct way.
That is why New York is so great ! :)

It is a view that has been around for a long time and that's the place it comes from--a long time back--some years ago and from some time before that NEW YORK was a really cold, hard, give a damn kind of place and the people were quite up front with how give a damn they were about anything outside of themselves

Now I'm not saying that everyone there now are angels and that the city doesn't still have somewhat of an edge to it --but people that I know there and the difference that I've seen in the place for myself in recent years has shown me that there has been a considerable change in general attitudes there over this last short while

Unfortunately, we NY'ers put up with a lot of scam artists, thieves, liers, dirtbags and bums everyday. We become very skeptical about everthing especially with people we meet on the street. Every nut in the country gets on a bus and heads to Times Square. They then decide that begging on the street while holding a sign declaring that they don't have enough bus fare to get to Osh Kosh is a good way to support their alcohol or drug habit. We question other peoples intentions but are quick to help others in genuine need.
I think the reputation you are referring to is not warranted and you will find most NY'ers to be very friendly and helpful.

I lived in New York for more than 50 years. I now live in North Carolina and the people down here also think ny'rs are rude and mean. I don't know why. At least ny'ers are not phony nice like southerners.

I lived in Boston, and can say the same about people from Boston, I also lived in Houston for a couple of months.

Additionally I visited Seattle and California.

I can say with a good amount of confidence that people on the west coast are significantly nicer and more friendly. Much easier to strike a conversation with and much more talkative to strangers.

You're meeting with people who hold a narrow-sighted perception of NYC residents. Keep looking in Michigan: you'll soon find some friendlier people there.
