I would probably define it as a spectrum disorder (meaning the term includes clinical features with a wide range of severity) characterized by having an impaired ability to interact with others in a social setting or to read social cues, particularly non-verbal communication, although individuals with the most severe forms of autism may have impaired verbal ability as well. I would also point out that autism does not effect intelligence, and autistic individuals are often extremely talented in certain areas, despite having difficulty in other areas.

check out the following website http://www.rdiconnect.com/
In one of his books Dr Gutstein describes the typical child as developing as a social scientist. The baby watches other come together and interact. he sees people do this over and over. He continually gather information and enjoys other interacting with him. To this child new and different experiences are considered a success.
The autistic child is also a little scientist seeking to learn about his world. However he is growing up in an environment of irregular sensory stimulation. Hyper sensitivity can cause what would amount to chaos. In such an environment, our little scientist attempts to shut out all external distractions and focuses his attention of a specific item. He is still gathering information, but only about this one item. For this child success is achieved when an event can be repeated. Having control over his chaotic surrounding becomes very important. New or unpredictable experiences are avoided.

Dr Gutstein does have a lot of info for free on his website. I know it must be difficult at times but keep on pushing yourself to try new (safe) things.
God Bless You
