Believe it or not -- it's David.
Samuel anoints David as the next king in 1 Samuel 16. David doesn't die until the second chapter of 1 Kings.
Remember that, originally, 1 and 2 Samuel were one book, so David is the main character of that one literary unit.
Theologically, the main character of Scripture, in whole or in any part, is God.
