Principal Engineer.

I searched for "IT industry" with "principal engineer" and then with "principle engineer" and it came back as both. But I think it's principal because it means "most important, consequential, or influential : CHIEF".

Well that depends. Are you going to engineer principles (i.e. be a social scientist) or be the primary / principal engineer?

Principle means "main" Principal; friend. I remember "pal"on the end from school days.
