Nobody will ever know for sure. The recordings do indicate a good chance that someone probably did enter the cockpit but are not conclusive proof. The voices could have still been on the outside of the cockpit door, or it may have only been partially breached. Keep in mind that the cockpit doors were not reinforced then as they are now.

Garfield's answer is actually not far from the truth, even if he was trying to be funny. When an otherwise serviceable aircraft hits the ground, the official term is "Controlled Flight Into Terrain" or CFIT.

I don't think anyone really knows for certain though the stories I've read about the audio tapes say the hostages \ passengers can be heard trying to get into the cockpit. I believe the plane crashed because the hijacker put it into an irreversable dive.
