In 1960, the 'Trix Boys' and the 'Trix Rabbit' were introduced to the General Public, as representatives from General Mills. The background to these characters was kept under wraps however, until a public declaration from General Mills publicists in 1990 that there was indeed a reason that the Trix Rabbit never could partake of his own breakfast product.
You see, the initial inspiration for 'Trix the Rabbit' was drawn from the (then) Vice-President of General Mills' wife, Trixie. It was known to only a small number of people in Minnesota (where General Mills is based) that Trixie had actually had an affair in 1959, and it was in a marketing brainstorming session that the VP of GM suggested the name 'Trix' for their newest cereal. Only upper management at that time knew both the name of his wife and the unfortunate affair, and the marketing department went full speed with 'Trix' and (at the urging of the VP) the 'Trix Boys'. It was also the VP's decision that the 'Trix Rabbit' (later found to be inspired from estate disputes) "..never actually get a bowl of Trix..". Seen as merely a great marketing gimmick at the time, the concept was used very successfully in commercials for the new product.
After the public declaration in 1990 it was decided that 'to turn heads away' from the sordid past of Trix, the rabbit mascot finally be allowed to, in 1991, partake of his own breakfast fav... ok, I have to be completely honest and say that I am making this up, but I thought for such a humorous approach to the question - you would've liked a humorous answer? =D
(For the record, the dates of the advertising is correct, GM is based in MN (the part about the affair is most definitely made up for the humor of this answer though).. but in 1991 the poor rabbit did finally get a bowl of Trix.. :)

Because children are cruel. You and I both know the trauma that pore rabbit endured. I bet he is still in counseling. Dealing with post traumatic stress disorder....He probably can't even look at a bowl of cereal without having anxiety attacks thinking someone will take it away. I hope none of these children had pets. I mean they probably graduated from torturing the bunny to serial killer status!
