Are they indoor or outdoor cats? Cats you should have one litter pan per cat you can go to Wal-mart or a pet store and buy plastic litter pans, litter, and a litter scoop. After the cat does either number 1 or 2 in the pan you scoop it up bag it and toss it in the trash. If your cats are wild (ferrel) cats I would say they have not been trained to use the litter pan. Usually the kitten's mothers trains them to use the litter pan. If your cat is an outdoors cat coming indoors it would not know how to use the litter pan. When you get small kittens you watch them and then when it comes time you have to keep showing them where the pan is and putting them in the litter pan after a while they get use to it, so they start using it on their own.
Your cats will also need something to scratch on if not they will scratch up your walls and furniture. Pet stores also sell these kinds of things.

There are different things that work for each individual cat. I used put the base of the litter box in a black garbage bag then fill it a third full of kitty litter. When it was time to change it I would just pull the bag inside out without spilling any of the litter. Unfortunately, the next cat I had shredding the bag so I stopped lining the box at all and just dumped it in a garbage bag once a week. Now I line my cat box with newspaper which helps keep the litter from sticking to the box. I change my box once a week. Yes, the cat will urinate and have bowel movements in the box. I use an inexpensive cat litter, but some people prefer the more expensive "clumping litter" that you can just scoop the poop out every once in a while. It's up to you. Good luck!

Do you have the box and the litter ready? Pour litter into the box. The instructions are always on the box or container on how much you'll need. Clumping litter is the easiest to use...dispose of the cat feces in the toilet, but dump the urine clumps into a small doggie poo bag before disposing in trash. Make sure you tie the bag up tight, cause cat urine is pretty nasty smelling. Use a litter scoop to pick up the waste from the litter box. If you use cheap cat litter, your house will smell really bad and it will be much harder to keep the box clean. Clean the box out EVERY DAY, at least once a dayl Cats are VERY fastidious (clean), and won't use a dirty litter box. Clean the litter box out every month with a good cleaner, like sudsy ammonia or at least dishwashing liquid. This is best done outside. Or you can use cat pan liners.
And no question is stupid if you learn something from it!

STOP!!! All the advice is very good except this. NOT ALL scoopable litter can be flushed down the toilet. If you live in a rural area in the midwest, even the flushable kind shouldn't be flushed. The water pressure isn't good enough if you have a well. Some scoopable litter is mostly clay, and it turns into a hard mud ball in your plumbing. Read the box and make sure it is flushable and you aren't in a low water pressure area. You are safe if you have city water and not a low flow tank. Just wanted to set you straight on that. Everyone else is right on with the cat litter. If you get the cheap stuff, expect it to be mostly clay and not flushable. Get the scoop away stuff and get it in bulk (38 lbs in a bucket) at Petco or Petsmart. It's much cheaper that way and lasts a long time, so it's worth it.

No, you aren't stupid at all. You are very smart to ask a question that will help you take good care of your cat. Get a large litter box, a good odor resistant brand of litter and a box liners at Petgo or Petsmart. You will need a large plastic scooper. Get an old door mat also. Place the box on the mat and put a liner inside the box. Next pour in about an inch of litter. That's all there is to it. Make sure your cat knows where it is. Scoop out the solid waste every day and flush it down the toilet. About every 4 to 7 days take the liner filled with dirty litter out of the pan, tie it up, and throw it in the trash. Replace the liner and the litter. Result: happy clean cat and odor free home.

Ok...buy a litter box, (very important); buy litter, (also very important); we get Fresh Step Scoop; the scoop stuff is great and you can just scoop it for a month, then completely change it at the end of the month. Stays clean and saves money if you scoop regularly.
Put the litter box where you want it, fill it with litter; 3 to 4 inches deep unless it's a kitten, in that case 2 to 3 inches. Place the cat/kitten in the box and gently press his/her behind in the litter. Cats are usually VERY easy to litter train.
They DO urinate in the litter box, (hopefully) but with clumping litter, it's very easy to scoop.
Scoop every day or every other day. If you have questions, IM me at ambeck23.

Having a new kitten myself, I understand. There are tons of litter out there, I currently use Arm and Hammer and the smell of the litter is unbelievably strong so we are going to switch to Fresh Step or something. Every time your cat goes to the bathroom, use the scooper thing to clean it out. At least clean it once a day to keep your house from stinking. If you are trying to train a kitten, put him/her in the litter box every couple of hours or so. If you see it scratching around put it in the litter box. It will get the picture.
As far as instructions on how to do it..put your litter that you've chosen in a litter box( you can get one with a lid and door or leave the door off) and pour litter about 3inches deep so cat can scratch around and cover it back up. You can also get the litter box liners, but my kitten hates them. Just remember to clean out litter box completely once every 2-3 weeks. The cat will pee and poop in the litter box, but it may take a few days and accidents. And place the litter box in the bathroom or laundry room, just make sure the cat has access to it at all times.

Everyone else is pretty much hooking you up correctly. But one bad thing they are suggesting is to flush the kitty litter (with the poop and pee) into the toliet. BAD IDEA! The litter will clog up the toliet and the water will over flow into your backyard in a huge flood of poopie and kitty litter. So do NOT flush the cat litter, I repeat do NOT flush the cat litter!

Fill half way with NON-SCENTED CLUMPING LITTER (the litter most cats prefer) place it convienently for the cats - (not next to scarey laundry machine) scoop every day or every second day -
if you have more than one cat you will need one litter box per cat
if you feed good food you will have less poops so will need to scoop less often (all grocery level food is not good - too much filler - too much poop)

make sureyou start with a really clean boxpreferrably a new box, then add a really good brand of litter avoid using clay litter since it tends to retain odors, another thing to add to any new or fresh litter is baking soda, it really helps kee the odor down, keep in mind that cats are prone to bad urinary problems so it is wisr to keep her litter bax as clean as possible.
