Besides seaming you can finish edges, especially on stretchy or silky fabrics where hemming is hard to do. Instead of having to fold over fabric twice them run a line of stitching you simply do an over lock stitch. If you want it decorative simply use a contrasting thread.

This stitching is also a safety stitch. I use it alot at work. It not only is decorative but with very fine fabric, it ensures that your seam will not unravel.
