It depends on how tightly you are pulling it back. If you are putting excessive tension on your hair follicles, the hair from your hairline will fall out. If you continue to do so, eventually your hair will stop growing back and your hair line will start receding. This is called traction alopecia. Basically, the longer and more often you wear your hair in tight ponytails, the greater the chance is that you will run into problems with hairloss.
The safest way to wear your hair pulled back is if your ponytail is at the nape of your neck, and somewhat loosely gathered. The higher the ponytail, the more weight you have pulling at the front
hairline. If you ever feel tightness on your scalp or hairline when you have your hair up, it is too tight. Pull the hair band away from the base of the pony tail until you can feel the tension subside.
Ponytails do not make your hair grow fast. The only thing that can affect the rate of your hair growth is maintaining optimal health - eat right, get enough sleep, and excersize to increase circulation. Not only will your hair benefit, but your whole body will too.

If you use rubber bands it can cause breakage, so use a scrunchy if possible. And yes it can lead to slow hair growth because the hair and scalp are not stimulated as much.
When you get home, and before you wash your hair, make sure you brush it. Boar bristle is best but any type brush that has small groups of bristles will do. No vent brushes please for this. The idea is to stimulate the scalp and move the oils in your hair out toward the ends. Brush the hair from scalp to ends making sure the brush contacts the scalp with each stroke. do this all over your head. This will cause your hair to grow better and help prevent dryness and breakage, lessening any problems from the needed ponytail.

What happens when you put your hair in a ponytail is that you often get breakage. Make sure to brush it and take it down when you can. Use soft scrunchies over the cheap elastics, they cause less damage. It has no effect on the growth rate.

constantly putting your hair up into a ponytail cause the ahir to break in a certain area. I've read that we're supposed to alternate between high and low ponytails to help with breakage.

Putting it up in a ponytail all the time will cause breakage..try leaving it down and conditioning really good...this should repair it, and remember, getting it trimmed will promote new growth!

I have heard the same thing but I have also heard that if you put your hair in a braid then it will help it grow faster and healthier.

It can be stressful on your hair. You might want to try braids... they look cute and are supposed to help hair grow too!
