If a tree falls in a wooded area and you hear it does it make a sound? sure . So why is it that if a tree falls in a wooded area and no person hears it why does no longer it make a sound, the definition of sound is "mechanical vibrations transmitted via an elastic medium, vacationing in air at a velocity of roughly 1087 ft (331 meters) in line with 2d at sea point." So if there is air then sound can commute via it, so sure if a tree falls in a wooded area and no person is there to hearken to it IT DOES MAKE a sound

no, because if there is nobody/ nothing to catch the soundwaves, there is no sound. For example, to produce sound you have to have 2 things, 1-soundwaves 2-"something" to convert the soundwaves. When a tree falls in the middle of a forest soundwaves are produced. when nobody/nothing is around to convert the soundwaves... no sound.

an old question, but a classic none the less!
it depends on your perseption of sound and also your belief in the universe and in imagination.

would you scream if you were on a deserted island knowing no one could hear you??

then think again...would the tree make a sound to prove a point, or be silent because all it cares about is what others think of it...

alot of modern thery stuff would defy normal thoguth and say no IF no organisms where there to senc or observe it however othe thigns can sence it adn u will never beable to clear the area of living things. no one knows where the line of being able to observe something stops. maybe the tree itself can sence itself fallign therefor it is being observed and therefor makes a sound.

The sound is there, whether anyone is there to hear or not is immaterial.
