John 1
The Life-Light
1-2 The Word was first,
the Word present to God,
God present to the Word.
The Word was God,
in readiness for God from day one.
3-5Everything was created through him;
nothing—not one thing!—
came into being without him.
What came into existence was Life,
and the Life was Light to live by.
The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness;
the darkness couldn't put it out.
The "Word" is Jesus(Christ) and they are one in the same. There is no "instead" rather an understanding that the Son is the father and the father the son. God in 3 persons and at the same time. Confused? It that easy and difficult...at the same time.

You are obviously not famililiar with the concept of the trinity.
Here are some verses from the beginning of John:
" 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ...
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
...
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
...
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. "
This passage is talking about Jesus (in case you couldn't figure it out). While jesus is not the Father, he is still God as the Father is God. Not a god, not a phrophet, but the God.
When we worship Jesus, we are worshiping God.

Because Jesus is God.
Okay, this is kind of weird, I know... but God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit are the same one God that is manifested in three different "persons"

Jesus is the son of God. God sent him to earth to spread his words to the people. However, many times people disobeyed his words and that is why God destroyed the earth. Jesus' death was cruel and harsh but he died for our sins. You get it OUR SINS, and we were not even born yet so why is everyone asking questions about whether Jesus is real or if God is real. We all are God's children. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to whoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

John 14:8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."
John 14:9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Of course, the problem with pointing out isolated Bible verses to non-believers, is that they don't believe to begin with. So these verses are by default untrue to them. To get non-believers to ponder the Truth, they must first be required to argue the case for their beliefs. Once they have tried to argue their case, it is easier to replace the holes in the argument with the Truth.

Derr! Jesus is god in the flesh, they are one. God loved us so much that he humbled himself to become a man (jesus) jesus bridges the gap between man and god. Therefore when we worship jesus we ARE worshiping god. The holy trinity. 3 devine persons, Father, son, and holy spirit united in the one supreme being................... because he was just the messenger.

At this point in time Jesus wasn't yet glorified, he hadn't died and risen again. After he was ressurected his deity was fully realised and people where able to start understanding that he was God on a larger scale. Peter confessed to Jesus that he believed Jesus was God and Jesus never corrected him, but instead seemed to affirm his belief. Hope it helped!
