The Diary of Anne Frank was one of the most moving stories I have ever read, partly because despite her hopes and dreams, despite the desperate struggle her family put up to stay alive, I knew that in the end, they died a cruel and horrible death.
It is a story everyone should read.

I did when I was pretty young - at college. I am sure millions of others have also read Anne Frank. I believe, this book (along with many others of course) has helped me to become more compassionate than, may be, otherwise I would be. The book gave rise to counterfacing emotions in my heart - one of anger and protest on the one hand and of love, care and compassion on the other. I am pretty sure this has been the case with everyone who has read it. Or at least anyone who reads anything with the conscious or sub-conscious desire to learn something from his or her reading. Thanks for this question.

I started reading the book but it was too long and then I became interested in reading another book so I didn't finish reading it.
Since you might like books about some historic event in it, you should try reading "Witness" by Karen Hesse. It's a very good short book that is written in a poetic form. It's fiction but it's based on historic events.

I did, and it was a sad book...if you're interested in books about the holocaust and WWII, there's an incredible book called "night" by Elie Wiesel...it won a Pulitzer prize and is guaranteed to make you cry and think differently about the world...plus, it's only around a hundred pages.
