I have a 6 week old Chihuahua. She is eating very well (about every 4 hours) and plays a lot. I know she has a tiny bladder and needs to go pee about every 3 hours. She sleeps next to my bed during the night and "calls" me when she needs to be taken outside, I take her, she pees, then falls back asleep.

My question: At around what age (generally speaking) can a Chihuahua hold his desire to go pee through the enitire night??

most puppies can hold on till sunrise at around 5months. some longer some sooner. depends on bladder development.so keep listening... also to help him along take water up an hour before your bed time. take him out before you go to sleep and if he makes it till sunrise get him out fast! .:) your a good momma.

As a guess, you can figure an hour for each month of age of the puppy. She should be able to "hold it" all night by the time she is 5 or 6 months old.
Of course this will vary with each dog, and the 6 month old puppy may not be to hold it that long every night.
Most of the responses I read were good
***EXCEPT**** leave food and water down at all times for your baby. Chihuahuas are very, very susceptable to hypoglycemia. (Low blood sugar) They have such tiny bodies they are unable to store any reserves. They use up all their energy really fast, it is vital they eat and drink at least every 6 hours, watch the feed bowl to make sure they are actually eating the food.
There is a supplement called Nutra-Cal you can pick up at any vets office (about $7.00) It looks like a tube of brown toothpaste.
It will prevent an outbreak, and can be given in an emergency.
Feed the baby about 1 inch of the Nutra a day (just put it on your finger) Usually the babies love it.
Hypoglycemia is a killer, so it is vital that the puppy has food and water available at all times (even at night).
Until the baby is at least 6 months of age NEVER withhold food and water....I know that will aggravate the need to go pee pee all the time.

Chihuahuas can't hold their pee more then 4 hours. Only Mexicans know this. That's why they always leave them behind when they cross the border. Mexico is full of abandoned Chihuahuas with crossed hind legs. If you let your Chihuahua drink expensive Tequila they hold that. Most dogs can't hold their liqueur you know. The down side though is they sing Ah Ya Ya Ya................. and 99 Bottles of Corona On The Wall all night long and that might keep you awake. Soon the little prick will want it's own red, white and black striped blanket and sombrero to wear and a little guitar. Not to mention because they are drunk and awake all night they take Doggy Siestas all day long and get so excited when you get home they pee on the carpet! Don't you wish you had got a Great Dane? Your not Mexican are you?

My toy chihuahua is about to turn 5 months old.. I've had him since he was 3 wks old.. we had this same problem b/c he was too scared to jump out of the bed!! We would take his food and water up around 6 pm and take him out right before bed time. Around 2 or 3 months he started sleeping through the night. Now, he has no problem gettin' off the bed, but I put up small "doggy stairs" so he can run up and down when he needs to. She will hold it better within a few weeks!! Good luck!! They are the best lil' dogs!!

Crated without water, by 2-3 months. I don't remember any of our puppies still needing a trip outside overnight at 3 months. You may need to take the water up at 7PM. Some puppies drink more water than they need just because it is there. In the day time, crated, 4-5 hours even at 7 weeks. Loose and playing actively, maybe 15 minutes. Watch the puppy, not the clock.

Can't say for the Chihuahua, but for larger dogs it takes about 6 months to be able to control through the night. I would think that the breed would not make that much difference.

Small dogs have small bladders. I doubt she'll have to go every four hours when she's an adult, but the small dogs I've sat for before generally got me up at least once in the night to go pee.

It's one of the many reasons I'm a fan of large breeds.

When she can go longer than eating every 4 hours. Be proud she is already potty trained at such a young age. Don't get lazy and start teaching her bad habits.

Are you giving her a large meal after six o'clock? Don't. it fills thier small tummies, and pushes on thier bladder. This makes it hard for tiny dogs to hold urine.

well the best thing to do is to take her out after each time she eats or drinks water. Thats what i did to train my cousins chihuahua. it worked well. it put her on a schedule. then as she got older it spread out.
