No small breed of designer dogs is cheap, but if you really want it you are going to have to pay.

The money spent purchasing a dog (or cat) is only the beginning.
To give the animal a good home for a long time, it will cost you money for veterinary care, including immunizations, yearly check-
ups, monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventive medicine, food, leashes and collars, pet sitters, etc.
But, with all that considered, if you are still thinking about getting a great pet, why don't you think about contacting a rescue organization? There are many all over the country. You could go to Petfinder.org and select DOG and then SHIH TZU and then YOUNG, and lots of dogs fitting this criteria will come up. There are so many benefits of getting a dog this way.
1. You are past the puppy stage, which means no worries about chewed furniture and wires, etc.
2. You will probably get a dog that has already had his/her puppy shots, and maybe even already neutered,so you don't have to worry about putting up the money for this or dealing with the pain, either. I have 3 rescue Shih Tzu's and I can tell you that NOTHING IS WRONG with them! I really cannot tell you why such wonderful dogs were not wanted by their former owners, except that those owners didn't appreciate what they had.
3. You can get healthy, young dogs from rescue, and you are not supporting the terrible puppy mills this way.
4. Most of the rescue dogs are already housebroken.
5. You can feel like a hero all around - by rescuing a wonderful animal who needs a home, and by using the most ethical way to find an animal, and by saving lots of money in the process as well!!!
Most rescue organizations really love their animals, and want to make sure that they will have a wonderful forever home, after their rocky beginnings, so be prepared for them to check you out. After all, they don't know you and are looking out for the dog.
They may even want to visit your home.
But it's all worth it in the end, when you will have a wonderful pet to give you lots of love for many years.
Good luck!

You get what you pay for with dogs. A cheap dog will wind up costing you a lot of money in vet bills and will break your heart when it gets sick and maybe dies. Adopt a cool dog from a shelter and tell it it's a shih-tzu, it won't be able to tell the difference!

If a Lhasa Apso would do instead, I know of one that needs a home (or did at least a week ago). As far as I know, pure-bred, but no papers, about a year to a year and a half old, needs spayed, but free. And every bit as cute as a shih tzu (blond, but so friendly and loving).

Almost every dog breed has some type of rescue organization.
The two I've located for you are: www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm
www.dogbreedinfo.com/rescue.htm
Usually you just have to pay for any shots or emergency medical care or a spay/neuter.
It's a very inexpensive way to get the little sweetie of your dreams and take care of a pet that someone else couldn't.
Good Luck!
PS I've rescued 3 cocker spaniels this way. They have been the best pets I ever had

I would try the nearest shelter. At least there you can give a second chance to a dog, and who knows, maybe a different breed may catch your eye and you'll get it instead of a Shih Tzu. But try your animal shelter.

try a shih tzu rescue group. if they don't have any puppies they could probably direct you to a reputable breeder who does. definitely don't go to a pet store though. those dogs come from puppy mills. you might be surprised at what you can find at your local shelter also. every single day more dogs come in and a lot of the times they are pure bred.

If you are looking to find a shitzu for cheap, don't. If you do not have means to care for a dog that is high maintenance, don't get one. I have four and they need lots of grooming and sometimes suffer from skin irritations that must be medicated and are somewhat costly. How much money are you willing to pay? Sometimes shelters have one or two but my advice is NOT to get one if you really cannot afford one.
