It's always an "iffy" proposition. When you use an extraction cleaner (often called a "steam" cleaner), a certain amount of the liquid from the machine will soak into the jute or synjute backing on the carpet. This fluid can carry the urine deeper into the carpet backing, or even into the padding underneath. The result is often that the carpet will seem fine after shampooing, but a few humid days will bring the stench back up like it was never removed at all.

If the area is large or has been developing for some time, the only way to completely get rid of the odor is to replace the carpet and padding. Sorry.

First try some of those steam cleaning solutions made specifically for pet odors and stains. You can get them at walmart or anywhere that rents steam cleaners. They work pretty well. But if the odor is very stubborn, I have to agree with the guy who said to replace the carpet and padding. Sometimes that is all you can do. But if you do decide to replace all of that, you absolutely HAVE to paint the floorboards before, or the smell will resurface through the new carpet and padding. I know this because my sister had animal stains and odors and replaced the carpet, and the carpet people would not replace it without painting over the floor.

I would not do that. The acid in the vinegar may have a harmful effect on your carpet. My sister had a cat pee problem: she put a bowl of vinegar with a sponge sitting in it near the odor and it absorbed it completely. Good luck!

Treat the spot directly with what ever you use and then use the steam cleaner. Simple Green or Natures Miracle are good brands to use. Oxyclean also has a good track record. You can also use a liberal amount of baking soda and water on it before you use the steam cleaner. Good luck.

I would spray the spot with white vinegar then get out my steam cleaner to shampoo the carpets.

Try using hair dye neutralizer first. I've heard it works good.
