Our 9-year old son has swollen, red, runny eyes since an hour or two ago. We don't know what caused it but he did go swimming in our apartment pool about 3 hours ago so, that's a likely cause. We've tried Visine eye drops and of course washing face and hands. What else can we try tonight? We can take him to see a doctor tomorrow if it's not better in the morning but I'd like to avoid a $2,000 emergency room bill for something that will probably clear up in a few hours.

Give him some Benadryl. He might be having an allergic reaction to the pool chemicals.!!

It sounds like an irritation due to the chlorine in the pool, although I wouldn't rule out conjunctivitis (Pink Eye). I'd say rinsing his eyes and applying a cool pack to relieve the swelling is the best thing for the night. See what is happening in the morning. Good luck!

Try cool cloths. I would avoid chemicals if it might be a chemical reaction to Chlorine. Try to rinse his eyes. You could use normal saline drops also known as artificial tears. If you think it is an allergic reaction, try benadryl. since it may be an allergic reaction, watch for respiratory problems. If he has any breathing involvement, I would bring him to Urgent Care, there is a 24 hour UC in Apple Valley. Otherwise Home Care should be fine.

I concur with the benedryl. But, it sounds more like pink eye to me. A doctor is a must, but can surely wait until tomorrow (unless the boy is in pain). Just make sure your wife and yourself keep YOUR hands washed as well.

Definitely give him a benadryl. If it doesn't clear up in an hour or so, take him to the ER and foot the bill.

yes you do have a problem on your hands. I mean that literally. you see, what you have is a severe contact lens infection. caused by improper cleansing of the lens, soft contact lens wearers, and the type of solution you are using. your condition is called (microbial keratitis) a doctor cannot help you. the kind of physician you need to see is an ophthalmologist. sometimes when ppl. who wear contact lens clean their Len's, they do it improperly. instead of just running them through the water, you rub the solution into the lens and massage both sides. then rinse. its called the rub and rinse method. store this in your memory for future use. and see a ophthalmologist as soon as you can. b-4 you damage your cornea to the point of blindness, or replacement surgery.

It sounds like they has too much chlorine in the water, give it a bit and if it doesn't clear up at least call your family doctor. My guess it is chlorine. It will clear up if it is! Good Luck!
