I used to enjoy singing in church when I was a kid. In fact I also learned to play many of the hymns on a piano. Now when I go to church, nothing. The last time I think I sang in church was when the news of Saddam being captured reached us. I'm a retired disc jockey (you know, one of those that actually played music on the radio, not scratching a record at a nightclub.) currently, I think the screeching of tires on the pavement sounds better than my singing voice. It's horribly off-key and totally embarrassing. But I do at least mouth the words and recite them in my mind so as to save others the pain and agony of having to listen to my singing voice.

Are you singing for the Lord or for those around you? I have been blessed with a fairly good voice and ability to sing well, so I love singing. But, I am not offended or annoyed in anyway when someone is praising God through song who may not be musically trained.
If you're worried about not knowing the words, there's only one way to fix that ... sing more often!

Singing in church is not compulsory but one must understand by singing praises to God we are joining with the choirs of angels in Heaven who praise Him all the time and thanking and blessing Him for our lives.
Singing in church is not a competition to see who sings the best. You can decide if u want to join with the singing of songs u dont know.
Just remember, Singing is praying twice.

I have no idea. I feel the same way as you do. I am tone deaf and have a fear of scaring people when I sing. Most of the time, I will sing very, very low, so no one but me can hear me. God does hear with His heart, but the people around me hear with their ears and I would really like not to distract people from singing their praises to God. :)

Yes. I used to sing in the choir and sing solos. No one cares if you sing off-key, others are doing that, too. Don't be self-conscious. True praise comes from the spirit, not the vocal chords.

I think you should try not to worry about it. God looks at the intents of your heart not that you are the best or worst singer. If you like to sing belt it out. No real Christian person would ever say or think something negative about someone who was worshiping God. So sing it loud! :)

Keep praising and singing because God loves the praises of his people and plus he hears you differently than how you sound to yourself. God bless!

I do not care for singing anywhere, but participate at services, even though my voice resembles fingers on a chalkboard. It's the thought that counts. Besides, God gave me this voice, so he must think it's OK.

God does not listen with human ears He hears with His heart. Love always sounds sweet. Sing with all you have and don't worry.
Peace of Christ,
