Key rationale as I believe:
a) They are rule books or instruction manuals for art of living. Those who wrote these books believed that certain methods are very effective for life and hence it needs to be communicated to larger mass so that people don't have to reinvent the wheel.
b) Assuming that a) is true, there needs to be some medium so that these learnings are not lost as generations come and go. In old age same used to happen through world of mouth when teaching system was effective and people had astonishing memory. Now with diminishing capabilities, those learnings have been written down in form of book.
c) Cognitive and mental abilities that different human beings vary significantly. Hence, these books carry lot of teachings in form of story which is easy to comprehend for simple minded people. Assumption was that people will follow the teachings with out putting too much pressure to their reasoning cells which not necessarily true in todays world which is leading to conflicts and skepticism.

Because we cannot rely on people to tell a story without changing it or forgetting details....some people just need to have it with them to have certain passages to read during particularly difficult times....not everyone know the whole story by memory.
