151 AKC recognized BREEDS (not species)...but this does not take into count all the wonderful mutts and all the new 'designer dogs' - labradoodles, yorkipoos, etc.

Wikipedia states that there are over 800 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. There are new hybrid breeds that are currently being considered as well as I noted on a special on Animal Planet (there are over a hundred of those). So I guess you can say over 900.
