I'm joining the USMC and considering Combat Photography but want to know a little more about the field. Such as:

Do you buy/use your own equipment?
What schools do you go through and what bases are they at?
Do they typically work for military news sources or with military intelligence?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You do not use your own equipment - the military supplies it for you. Your schooling will include courses in photography, processing, and techniques, as well as all the other schools that a normal marine goes thru (gun shooting, killing people, living for 12 days on 5 days worth of food...). The school is probably the same as the navy school, so it's most likely at Norfolk, VA.

You can work with either news or intel, depends on who needs what at the time. One major command is the Navy News Service.

I had a friend who was a photographers mate in the Navy, it was a cool job and he had fun.

Cheers!

If you really want that job, join the Air Force where you can jump with special operations teams of all services. Of course they provide you with equipment & fairly thruough tech school. The Marine job you are refering to is a Public Affairs newspaper type job. If you're really into photography, there are many other more interesting things you can do.
