playing mostly - I've seen cats do that for ages now - you fish it out and they toss some more. I swear they do it just to torment you. You know, like when a baby throws a rattle or bottle just to watch you fetch it.

I read some place that cats have difficulty seeing the water level in their bowls because they don't like to get wet and so by putting the food in the bowl he is able to detect the level. If you get a water bowl with colored rims in it he will be able to measure it without putting food in it. I bought stoneware bowls with a bold stripe at the top and mine has no problem judging the water level.
I also have a friend who's cat puts a paw in his water to detect the level before he drinks from his bowl.

your cat is doing what my small dogs do, they put the hard food in the water for a long amount of time to make the food softer for them to eat. i took my dogs which are very small adult dogs to the vet to ask the same thing and they looked in there mouths and they had a few bad teeth, so after the teeth got fixed they dint place the food in the water in more.

I've had over a dozen cats and none of them ever screwed around when it came to their dry food. If they did anything other than eat it, it meant they couldn't stand it. Try something else, even if it costs a bit more; he's worth it.
