Tito had Shamrock on his back raining elbows to his head. He was winning the fight, but the ref stopped the fight at 1:18 of the first round due to the fact that Shamrock was unintelligently defending himself at the 1. Meaning that he was not intelligently covering his face or changing positions so that he would minimize the damage or change the tables! Eventhough the second blow of the elbow (out of 5!) to Shamrock's head seemed to make his body go limp, I personally think the ref should have waited few more seconds before making that decision! Shamrock got up right away and did not seem phased by the blows, but he was very suprised and in disbelief by the stoppage of the referee. It seemed like he wanted to fight more. Shamrock has been in the similar position in the past and he has managed to fight in more brutal conditions. The truth is though, Tito was too strong for him.

After less than a minute of standup, Ortiz took Shamrock down, and just started pounding him. Ortiz dropped 5 hard elbows on Shamrock's head, and he did nothing to block them them or fight back. At 1:18 into the first round, the referee (I believe it was Herb Dean) stopped the fight, as Shamrock wasn't defending himself (though I agree with Ortiz that Shamrock's brain may be so dysfunctional he may not have realized he should be doing something to defend himself, or his skull may be so dense that it really doesn't do any damage.)

I too was disappointed in the fight, especially as a Shamrock fan - but I have to say a few words in defense of the ref, Herb Dean.
He did his job - and he did it well. His primary job is to protect the safety of the fighters. Shamrock was clearly stunned (hard to definitively say if he was momentarily knocked out) and did not answer nor defend a series of blows by Ortiz. Herb Dean jumped in and stopped the fight to protect what may have been a hurt Shamrock.
Those guys make it look easy on tv, but make no mistake, they hit HARD and a single shot by one of them would knock most people senseless. Why do you think there are only a handful of top fighters? It isn't like football where they are wearing padding and helmets. Serious damage can and does occur.
I've seen fights where the ref was scared to jump in or waited too long and one of the fighters did get hurt. Anyone remember the fight b/w Mir and Sims when Sims illegally grabbed the fence and stomped on Mir's face? He got in about 4 kicks before the ref stopped him. The fact is, that ref should have stopped it after the 1st illegal kick, but he hestitated b/c he was not as experienced. Mir was lucky in that he didn't get seriously hurt.
Herb Dean and Big John McCarthy are the sports two best refs - and they get little thanks for protecting the fighters.
Also, just wanted to point out that just b/c Shamrock jumped up right after it was called doesn't mean he wasn't stunned or even momentarily knocked out. Many fighters get knocked out for split seconds and wake up thinking the fight is still going on - it happens all the time.
I was bummed out too that fight was over so quick and that Ortiz didn't get his *** whooped, but I can't fault the ref.

i forgot the name of that referee but he's such an idiot for stopping the fight too early. he could have waited 5 more seconds or at least 3 more elbows from ortiz before stopping the fight... if i had watched that fight live i would have killed that referee for stopping too soon a fight that was potentially the most exciting fight of the night... they say shamrock couldnt defend himself intelligently after those 5 elbows, well i say thats all ********. we all saw shamrock stand up immediately after the stoppage, that just proved that he still got more blows to take... he was hurt by those elbows no doubt, but not hurt enough for a quick stoppage, i feel shamrock was not in danger or anything and he could still have turned things around had that stupid referee gave him enough time to do so... i hope the ufc suspends that ******* referee coz he just robbed the fans of a really good fight...
the fight was stopped at exactly 1:18 of the first round... you can just imagine both fighters were still breaking a sweat...
just poor refereeing, plain and simple...

Yeah thats what I heard, 5 elbows, and a premature stoppage.
Props to Ortiz, but also, Shamrock stepping in the octagon at 42! Hes still a great fighter, just past his prime.

Shamrock came out with a flurry of punches, kind of took Tito back, but Ken made a mistake Tito took him to the ground Tito landed about five elbows and the ref stopped it. He stopped it to early though. It was about 1:18 seconds. Shamrock wasn't even heard. Personally I think they need to fight again.
SHAMROCK RULES!

tito owned him all 3 situations. heavily. perhaps once the ref stopped the strive against too early, even if it did not count. And that is coming from a Shamrock fan. Ortiz took him to college.

It was a correct stoppage. Ortiz could have knocked him out with a few more elbows. When you don't defend yourself, the rules say the ref must stop it. Ken knew he was going to lose, and was looking for a way out.

yeah, pretty pathetic. they say Shamrock did not intelligently defend himself but I think he was trying to move his head to the side, it sucked. then Ortiz pretended to dig a grave and drag a body into it. like he actually beat him. they should fight again and this time let it go a little.

Ortiz elbowed him like five times and the ref called it..... it sucked.
I can't recall the exact time, but under two minutes, I believe.
