I wouldn't even begin to try to name this sensation. I will say, however, that it is certainly not normal, and even sounds dangerous. I would advise you to see your primary physician as soon as you can to discuss this matter. He or she should probably order a comprehensive neurological work-up for you. It could be due to something as common as stress, an inner ear problem, or a problem with your eyes, so don't assume the worst. But please get yourself checked.

This has happened to me and I think it has something to do with the physics of driving. Something about travelling at a certain velocity. I feel this more if my car is a smooth ride. You could be travelling at 90 mph and feel as if you're not even moving because the ride is so smooth. This can obviously be dangerous and I've caught myself doing it more times than I care to admit. You feel a drive more, I think, if you're in stop and go traffic because of the jerky movements but not if you're in non-stop traffic like on a turnpike or long-distance trip on a highway.

Alpha state
Edit: Seriously - what you are describing is a normal occurrence - it's form of self-hypnosis
lemme guess....you've been driving for a while - steady speed, familiar road, routine motions, same old same old, your movements are almost automatic - redundant, familiar, lulling...
Pretty soon you're on autopilot, just cruising, disconnected, dreamy, your mind roaming free, ideas dancing through your relaxed psyche....sublimely disconnected, detached......
Alpha state.
You've hypnotized yourself with the routine drudgery of a familiar drive.
Not uncommon by any means. Perhaps you've experienced something similar while doing dishes, mowing the lawn....
Some people have their best ideas on the way to work

It could be either, but I'm going to guess it's a bit of both. Equilibrium problems can cause similar feelings. If I were you, I'd contact my doctor and have a few tests done.
