If you are talking about religion, as it pertains to a supreme being/creator, it cannot be researched because it is based on a supernatural phenomenon. Only natural phenomenon can be researched, and that is done as follows:
1. Define the question
2. Gather information and resources
3. Form hypothesis
4. Perform experiment(s) and collect data
5. Analyze data
6. Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for a theory
Aside from people who have rejected religion because "God killed their dog, sunk their boat, etc.", most atheists I know are individuals who accept things as factual based on the above described "scientific method." Because religion is a "faith" based theory, there is no way to directly do #4) perform experiments and collect data. It literally cannot be researched in any logical manner. Atheists have made the logical choice to reject religion because of an overwhelming LACK of evidence, whereas Christians have made a conscious choice to believe in religion IN SPITE OF an overwhelming lack of evidence. The fierce debate on this subject arises from the fact that most religious people are under the impression that things like the bible, historic religious texts, anecdotal evidence, churches, remarkable coincidence (aka miracles), and strong personal feelings/experiences constitute evidence. Not true.
So, my answer would be that due to the tendency for atheists to have backgrounds in the fields of science, math, logic, etc, as a group they probably engage in more overall research in life PERIOD, and thus are more inclined to reject things that require strict faith as a prerequisite for belief (ie. ESP, life after death, reincarnation, dowsing, aliens, clairvoyance, and YES, religion.)
As an agnostic from approximately the age of 10, and an atheist from perhaps 15, I can tell you that I was raised in a Roman Catholic household and given the standard childhood catechism. I attended mass enough times to know the common prayers by heart. I have read enough about the basic tenants of different religions to know that I have a fair understanding of the socio-political-economic forces responsible for the thousands of years of theocratic government this world has seen (not that that has anything to do with a persons personal belief system.) Put simply, my decision to reject theism was brought on by years of unsatisfactory answers to seemingly simple questions (aka lack of evidence), combined with the uniformly stubborn position the church holds that there is no "middle-ground." You either have faith, or you don't.
I will say this... if satisfactory evidence could be produced which supported the existence of a supreme being/creator, I don't see any reason why I would have a problem accepting it. But until then, I can't see any reason why I should believe in ANY religion, since it will make zero difference in who I am, how I approach life, or what will happen to me when I die... unless of course someone can show me evidence to the contrary :)

I am an atheist and I have done much study on different religions before deciding that God was an impossibility. Most Christians are such by default, and if they have done any research it was only on their own religion or required for a class. I have found that people who have converted to a different faith have done the most research, whatever faith they may have converted to.

How come you keep leaving the Agnostics out? What are they, chopped liver?
Agnostics beat Christians -And- Atheists 10:1 in the in-depth research of religion, and not just Christianity. We study Islam, Judiasm, Buddhim, Hinduism, Shinto, Tao, Discordianism, and Paganism, too, among many other things.

I would assume that Atheists probably do, but many Christians may do a lot of research on religion, too.

Personally I would say this question can't be asked on a general scale but on an individual one. Not all atheists have researched and not all Christians haven't.

It always depends on the person, but I think that atheists do more research because there are so many Christians out there who never question their faith or church's authority. Although I'm a devout Christian, I think it is absolutely essential to question Christian beliefs because you cannot truly believe something unless you questioned it.

I don't know about other athiests but i have in fact read the bible and have researched everything there is to know about christianity and almost every other religion out there.. why you may ask. Because i like to be right. I read the bible to pick out all the things i didn't believe (everything) and then i reaserched them. I do this for one reason and one reason only....to prove that God and the devil and everything else on that matter does not exist. (in my opinion)

properly positioned it this kind. Do you've self belief a 2000 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous e book which has been translated and adapted this style of large style of circumstances. Or... Do you've self belief in technological knowledge which inspite of the laughter of creationists one hundred years in the past over the concept that each thing is made from very small "atoms" created many present day technologies at the same time with radios and the nuclear bomb. The bible replaced into functional in its time. The sensible people have always had a difficulty with small minded fools. a thanks to regulate them and provides you up them from destroying each thing? supply them the whip or grant them prosperity? What about both! grant them Heaven in the experience that they are sturdy, moral those who attempt to help others and more suitable useful humanity. And hell in the experience that they convey on needlessly killing, destroying and abandoning morality, reason and intelligence. It labored for alongside time till all of us grew to grow to be more suitable sensible, small minded collectively regrettably. The small minded sensible guy sits in his CEO's chair using fantastic mind ability to more suitable his targets of gaining something which not purely helps easily no one yet as well motives the destruction of the completed damn planet. it really is this style of shame that Christianity isn't embraced because the inspiration for our custom those days. This should be fixed or humanities destiny will be rather. no matter if the bible replaced into invented by skill of guy or God it really is irrelevant. it really is a sturdy project inspite of if God exists purely as a human proper.
